The creative industry in the UK is worth a staggering £101.5Bn, yet schools up and down the United Kingdom the creative curriculum is being phased out of schools, so much so that the BBC has found that 9 in 10 schools are having to cut down lesson time, specialised teaching staff and facilities in at least 1 subject. So how can we combat this?
How can creative subjects be brought back to life?
Integration of the arts. This concept is not new, however it has a lot of potential in tackling the problem our schools are facing. By creating a campaign about championing the creative potential of coding and we can demonstrate that creative subjects can be integrated with core subjects easily with positive results. Coding for fun, coding for creativity's sake, coding for self expression.
The identity for FUNCTION! is designed to garner attention through the use of bold colours, strong typography and creative copy.
The name 'function' in some coding language is a section of a program that performs a specific task and returns a value. As the word 'fun' sits at the front of 'Function', the name lended itself to the informal, serious yet playful visual language and overall tone that 'Function' was all about.
The Function wordmark encapsulates the very essence of the mission. The informal colours and the higgledy-piggledy 'fun' represents the creative side of Function. The curly brackets reference the coding world in which Function is bringing to the fore through STEAM, and the impactful typeface draws in attention and brings Function to front of everyone's mind.
The Function! identity was designed to be applied on various different mediums on a scale of sizes from the very beginning. The use of easily identifiable assets/characters help make Function a versatile and friendly identity.
A fun, informal, yet serious mission needs a typeface that emulates the same core values. Bungee Shaded by DJR was the perfect choice – The ideal blend of bold, impactful that can be used both in a serious context and in a way that can be used to highlight the issues Function is all about.
The mascot came into being naturally as the visual language developed. Easily recognisable and friendly, the Ü character serves as an excellent mascot for Function while still upholding the values and ideas this identity portrays.
The Function Info Pack is a package material that caters towards both the parents and the teachers of children, and the children themselves. Inside the Info Pack contains multiples goodies, but the two main pieces contained within are the Manifesto and the Zine.
The Manifesto is the main piece of content found inside the Info Pack. Filled with comprehensive information aimed towards the parents and the teachers of the children. This booklet breaks it down into 6 sections – the problem, our creative industry, the solution, abount Function!, how we can help, who is involved.
The Zine is condensed, succint version of the manifesto aimed primarily towards the main target audience, the kids. The fun format of the zine appeals to a younger audience while simultaneously informing them of the wonders of creative coding, and the problem they didn't know they faced.
Among the bright colours, impactful typography and the infectious playfulness of Function's identity, we have the assets that make up the backbone. These are symbols that are synonymous with coding, and so they are integral to the identity to symbolise the coding aspect of Function.
